The institution has a long history having first begun in 1840. The University combines this heritage with innovative excellence in teaching and learning.
It is situated close to the city centre, one hour away from London Waterloo, in a beautiful wooded setting overlooking the South Downs.

What's on OfferProgrammes of study span the humanities, arts, performing arts, social sciences, health, education and business. The University is also one of the country’s largest providers of primary teacher training.
The University has good sports facilities and is currently re-developing its outdoor facilities. There are PCs across the campus and all campus accommodation has Internet access provided free of charge. The library was recently refurbished and extended to provide excellent study resources and spaces.
A new Student Union opens in September 2007, part of the University Centre. It includes a 1,200 capacity venue space for concerts, club nights and events complete with bars, as well as a cinema. The Centre also has catering facilities, a bookshop, mini-mart and Internet Cafe.
Excellent learning resources exist as well such as performance and rehearsal spaces plus dance studios. There is also a multi-media suite with film and media equipment, sound and editing facilities.
Student Services is responsible for student careers, health and welfare services. Whether students are concerned about finding a job, struggling with dyslexia or looking for childcare, help is available through this service.
