University Of Strathclyde Student Story
Lesley Martin
M.Eng, Electronic and Electrical Engineering with Business
“I joined the Electronic and Electrical Engineering Department of Strathclyde in 1994. I directly entered the second year of the course having completed A-levels in my home town of Belfast. The decision to study at Strathclyde was an easy one due to the university’s good reputation for engineering, and Glasgow’s reputation for being a lively, friendly city.
My period as a student at Strathclyde did not disappoint me. The degree course was excellent, covering a wide range of basic and applied subjects in all areas of electronic and electrical engineering. The lecturers will go out of their way to help with any problems. Having entered directly into second year, I found the friendship and support the students gave to one another particularly welcoming.
When a well earned break from study is due, Glasgow offers an incredible selection of bars, night-clubs, cinemas, theatres and restaurants.
In 1998 I graduated with an M.Eng degree. My main area of technical interest was in telecommunications. The department’s staff made it possible for me to undertake a three month industrial placement with Scottish Telecom in Glasgow, and a further three month placement with Siradel, a small telecommunications software company in Rennes, France. These placements were made possible through the strong links the department has with industry and also with many other European universities.
I very much enjoyed my time at Strathclyde and found the course itself rewarding. At the end of my university career I can honestly say that I have made many lasting friendships, had four great years, and obtained an excellent degree which will present me with great opportunities in the future.”
Lesley joined Mott Macdonald, Engineering Consultants where she is now responsible for managing and implementing electronics and electrical engineering design and assessment assignments.
