The University of Essex is one of the UK's leading academic institutions. Founded in 1964, in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2008 Essex was rated ninth best university in the UK for the quality of its research.

There are around 10,000 students, studying across three campuses: our Colchester Campus is set in 200 acres of beautiful parkland on the outskirts of the town; the Southend Campus is located in the heart of the town centre so students are well located to take advantage the town's attractions; and the Loughton Campus offers the cultural diversity of London but in an attractive and peaceful setting. Our campuses enjoy excellent road and rail links across the surrounding area and are based under an hour away from London.

The University was ranked 15th in the Times Higher Education (THE) survey in January 2010 for offering the best all-round student experience. The University scored strongly for its high-quality and helpful staff, good community atmosphere and campus environment, well structured courses and good extracurricular activities.
