Founded in 1964, the University has grown in both reputation and size, developing a worldwide reputation for top quality teaching and research. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) Essex was rated tenth out of 136 institutions in the UK.
There are now more than 8,000 students, studying across three campuses in Colchester, Southend and Loughton.
