The University aims to make sure that students have access to any support they may need - academic, personal, medical, financial - from people who are easy to contact and who can give friendly and expert guidance.
Students are given their own personal Adviser of Studies, who they meet with in Freshers' Week, and who provides advice and guidance on subject choice and monitors academic progress.
Student Support Services consists of a range of services based in and around the campus. There is a Student Counselling Service, which is free and confidential, the Rocking Horse Nursery, which provides childcare for preschool age children of students, and a Student Advisory Service. The University welcomes students with disabilities and it is our policy to consider applications from all students on the same grounds. The University Disability Adviser offers support and guidance and is a first point of contact for students with disabilities. Every department has a disabilities co-ordinator, the newest halls have wheelchair access and the library has scanners for sight-impaired students. There is also a Chaplaincy Centre, which is open to members of any religious persuasion.
The Student Advice Officer offers confidential, independent advice and information on a wide range of matters, including loans and tuition fees, welfare benefits, employment and consumer rights, discrimination, university procedures and legal concerns.
Full NHS and dental services are available to students. The Old Aberdeen Medical Practice is located close to King's College campus in a new purpose built Health Centre and has many years of experience in providing advice and treatment to students.
The Students' Association (SA) is the organisation that represents and serves students interests and works to make your time at Aberdeen as happy and enjoyable as possible through provision of its services. There is a Money Advice Officer who can help with managing finances and an Information and Advice Centre. The SA operate a Joblink service, which helps to find part-time employment for students and Niteline, a confidential listening and information service. The SA sabbatical officers can also help with any academic problem a student may have.
