University Of Aberdeen Facilities
The University of Aberdeen prides itself on offering the very best learning resources and support to students. The University will guide students with their course choices and assist students with looking after their health, finances, career, personal and social life. The University community provides a strong network of support for international students to ensure that they get the most out of student life.
At Aberdeen ancient buildings sit side by side with modern, newly refurbished, first-class laboratories, excellent computing facilities and the latest library technology. The University library, spread over four sites, is one of the largest and best equipped in Scotland, with over one million volumes in stock. Aberdeen has one of the longest opening hours of any university library in Britain and access to the library catalogue can be viewed from a PC anywhere in the world.
There are over 1,000 computers for student use, many of which are available 24-hours a day, seven days a week as well as wireless network access at hotspot locations around the campus. Students are also given free access to the internet and email, and computing Help Desks are situated within each library and computing centre.
The University also boasts the sixth most important museum collection in the country, with collections of international importance built up over centuries. Special libraries and archives hold over 180,000 volumes, including a great deal of rare and unusual material and the Marischal Museum holds permanent and changing exhibitions and art collections to complement studies.
A high-tech Language Centre is open to all students and offers excellent audio, video, computer and satellite television facilities, and an extensive library and courses for students whose native language is not English as well as offering all the language learning advice and support a student might need.
On-campus sports facilities are outstanding, and include a swimming pool, tennis courts, squash courts, playing fields, cardio-suite and performance gym.
September 2006 will also see the completion of a huge-scale renovation project to develop and enhance catering and social facilities on campus. ‘The Hub’ will offer students a wide variety of facilities including dining, retail and drop-in centres all under the one roof.
The Medical Centre adjacent to campus is accessible to all international students, as is the chaplaincy where all faiths are welcome.
