Course Description
The Victorians were fascinated by visual culture. Innovations in fields as diverse as glass production, photography, book illustration, 'modern' art, or even the humble magic lantern had a huge impact on nineteenth-century debates about aesthetic value, the nature of 'reality' and 'realism', subjectivity and the imagination, and ways of looking. These debates were also significant within the literature of the period. The course samples a variety of texts - poetry, prose, satirical journalism, novels and novellas, some intended for adults, some for children - each of which exemplifies the influence of the visual on the way the Victorians understood and wrote about their world. We will explore literary representations of women, children, criminals and criminality, the country and the city, and the portrayal of issues such as class, race and gender, in the context of visual materials such as contemporary photographs, paintings, drawings and cartoons.
