Course Description
Much of the landscape around us has been shaped during the last 400 years. In 1600 many villages were still farming in the old-fashioned 'open-field' way, but others were already enclosed, and in the 18th and 19th cemnturies Parliamentary enclosure reshaped whole landscapes, and enormous acreages were reclaimed from the wild. Also new fashions were transforming gentry houses, getting rid of their formal garden surroundings, and replacing them with a sea of green - the English landscape park. We shall be trying to understand the processes that created the rich variety of the English landscape today, using pictures, documents and maps.
