Course Description
This course is completed over 24 weeks and involves college based instruction and work site practical experience. It has been devised to prepare students to enter employment with skills in chainsaw operation and forest machine operation. You will gain a combination of vocational and National Unit qualifications, that you can use to progress to further forestry study (either vocational or university) or to the work based SVQ 2-3/Modern Apprenticeship qualifications or directly into employment. The main topics covered are:• Practical forestry craft skills in chainsaw use in felling and delimbing• Practical commercial extraction of forest produce using tractors, skidders and forwarders, including elements of planning, control and site management• Forest theory relating to harvesting sites, health and safety, use of chainsaws and forest machines, identification of forest trees, products and uses, and information technology • It may be possible to gain optional, externally assessed, NPTC qualifications (Chainsaw and / or FMO) upon successful completion of this course.

Notes: The college is situated approximately 8 miles from Dumfries on the A701 Moffat Road. It is located within a 262 Hectare estate comprising of commercial farm, fish farm and deer farming enterprise. The college offers a wide range of courses, can cater for up to 90 residents and provides sport fishing, multigym, snooker and many other recreation and leisure facilities.
