Course Description
Following military conquest, the Roman government organized the laying out and construction of cities and towns to foster local government and commerce on the Roman model. These it was hoped would replace the unsophisticated and rural lifestyle of the British tribes. We shall examine the comparative successes and failures of this plan in urban centres from the largest like London to the smallest like Dorchester-on-Thames.
