Course Description
COURSE OVERVIEW:If you are interested in computer software design, how computers communicate and how they actually perform their tasks, then this course is for you. After you complete this course you will have the skills necessary to pursue a career in computing in a wide range of commercial and industrial organizations; for example, you will be able to contribute to the invention of new computer-based applications, the creation of computer-based data processing tools or the development of Web applications. You will also develop skills in project management and teamwork.Magee is a wireless campus and teaching and learning is conducted in state-of-the-art lecture theatres and smart classrooms.STRUCTURE & CONTENT:You study six modules in each of the first two years of the degree, covering subjects such as programming, information management, systems analysis and design, mathematics, computer architectures, algorithms and data structures, object-oriented programming, networks and data communications, human-computer interaction and multimedia authoring.Years 1 and 2 are spent in the University. In Year 3 you can choose to undertake a year's work experience, in the UK, Ireland or Europe. You can also study in the USA. These options lead to either the Diploma in Industrial Studies (placement year), or the Diploma in Area Studies, if the year is spent in study abroad. In Final Year you will complete a major project and dissertation. The project involves the analysis, design, implementation, testing and evaluation of a substantial computer-related problem.EXEMPTIONS & TRANSFERABILITY:Transfer between courses within the Faculty of Engineering may be possible on the basis of academic performance.Professional RecognitionTopThe current degree is accredited by the British Computer Society, which is a nominating body of the Engineering Council.PROGRESSION:Graduates with computer science and communications technology skills will find many career opportunities available to them, in developing new software, as project managers, in systems analysis, in planning and technical management, or in information management and database environments. Skills developed in the course will always be in strong demand, as virtually every modern enterprise needs increasing numbers of computer-literate graduates. Opportunities for postgraduate study in computing, engineering or related areas are substantial.
Course Fees
Students on full-time Higher Education programmes will be required pay £3,145 per year towards their tuition fees, which can be deferred until after you leave University and are earning more than £15,000 per year. Prospective full-time higher education students should contact their local Education and Library Board for an application form to determine the level of maintenance grant, maintenance loan and tuition fee loan available to them. Entry Requirements
A Level: A minimum of 260 UCAS Tariff Points to include grades BC. All subject areas considered. Grade C in GCSE English and Mathematics or equivalent.Irish Leaving Certificate: 260 UCAS Tariff Points to include grades BBCCC.BTEC National Diploma: Successful completion of BTEC National Diploma with D, M, M profile in Engineering or Electronics or IT. For any other subject areas please refer to the Faculty Office.HND: Successful completion of HND with 2D, 3M and 1P or 1D and 5M (excluding common skills modules) in final year for Year 2 entry in Computer Science or Electronics and Computer Systems. Or successful completion of HND for Year 1 entry.
