Course Description
This programme is primarily designed for competent musicians who want to run workshops and group tuition and pursue careers in community based music-making. The programme combines the practical and theoretical aspects of music teaching together with learning through experience via a community placement. During the two years students are taught to work as a group and how to network and research. The programme develops harmony and musicianship skills; song writing, improvising, arranging, composing skills; search and reflect, a curriculum of pieces designed for mixed ability groups. Practical sessions highlight many of the issues around working with mixed ability groups; workshop techniques, identifying and developing the skills necessary to be a good workshop leader, making contacts, planning and developing projects, working with diverse groups, facilitation, the how and why of funding, outreach, evaluation, understanding technology, planning a curriculum, good workshop practice, long-term development, working in schools; scratch pieces, workshop pieces from a wide variety of sources and their possible applications. Students are expected to run in-class workshops each year which take place in a supportive and constructive atmosphere; also to attend a community placement for two hours a week for most of one term which are made with skilled tutors in a variety of settings; in year two, students are expected to initiate, develop, run and evaluate a community based music project by themselves.

Entry Requirements
The course welcomes musicians from all backgrounds. You do not need formal qualifications, but you should be proficient on your main instrument, have good communication skills and a desire and commitment to work in what can be a challenging area of music. Admission is by interview and audition.
