Practical sessions highlight many of the issues around working with mixed ability groups; workshop techniques, identifying and developing the skills necessary to be a good workshop leader, making contacts, planning and developing projects, working with diverse groups, facilitation, the how and why of funding, outreach, evaluation, understanding technology, planning a curriculum, good workshop practice, long-term development, working in schools; scratch pieces, workshop pieces from a wide variety of sources and their possible applications. Students are expected to run in-class workshops each year which take place in a supportive and constructive atmosphere; also to attend a community placement for two hours a week for most of one term which are made with skilled tutors in a variety of settings; in year two, students are expected to initiate, develop, run and evaluate a community based music project by themselves.
