Course Description
The aim of the course is to emphasise the biological aspects of processes and their effective design, modelling, monitoring and control. Can lead to Chartered Engineer (CEng) accreditation by the relevant UK professional engineering institution. Stages 1 and 2 are substantially common. In Stage 1 you study a mixture of mathematical, information technology and chemical engineering subjects along with some chemistry. A sixth of your modules can be chosen either from a set of technical elective engineering subjects, or from modules in a modern foreign language. In Stage 2 you study a wide range of chemical engineering topics which are designed to give you sufficient theoretical background to prepare you for gaining industrial experience at the end of the year. Design projects allow you to apply your knowledge while learning to work with others in small groups. If you have chosen the MEng (Europe) degree, the language modules become compulsory in both Stages. If you have registered for the BEng programme and pass your Stage 2 examinations with Merit, you may transfer to the MEng programme for the final two years. Our four-year MEng degrees are intellectually demanding programmes and give you the opportunity to take a four-year degree where you follow modules that cover various aspects of chemical engineering, including the design of a complete plant. At Stages 3 and 4 you can follow a broad chemical engineering programme, or choose to specialize and obtain Honours in areas such as process control, bioprocess engineering, sustainable engineering or intensified processing. Your final semester will be spent on a full-time research project carried out in the University or in industry, in the UK or abroad, which counts for half your study time throughout the year.
