Course Description
The international art market is exciting, complex, fast moving - and it takes no prisoners. This comprehensive overview is designed to give students a thorough understanding of the past, present and possible future of worldwide markets for visual art. We look at the roles of public and private galleries and of individual artists, at art styles and media, and at the world auction scene. We discuss the rise and fall of art prices and the reasons for this market volatility, artists copyright and droit de suite, gallery percentages - and at the value of provenance, exhibition spaces and art criticism. The course will give those starting out or contemplating work in the commercial art world both art and financial acumen.
