Course Description
This two-year course surveys the art of Western Europe and America from classical antiquity to the present day. It is designed to provide students with an intellectually stimulating and systematic introduction to the most significant artists and movements. The course includes antique sculpture, Anglo-Saxon manuscripts, gothic churches, early renaissance frescoes, English country houses and Victorian architecture. It covers movements such as the Pre-Raphaelites, Impressionists and Cubists and the work of artists such as Michelangelo, Titian, Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Warhol. The course equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to understand, analyse and enjoy art from a great range of periods. Lectures, class discussion, essays and field trips provide the opportunity to develop independent thought and to evaluate current research and scholarship in a critical manner. This is a course for all who want to deepen their knowledge of art history. The systematic and comprehensive syllabus equips students to understand the culture and context of works of art from across the broad field of study and to develop existing knowledge and enthusiasm within a wider historical framework.
