Course Description
Human interest in dress and adornment has been evident since pre-history, and dress studies have become an established tool for historians and anthropologists in understanding society. Covering the 1700s to the present day (plus some earlier periods such as Classical Greece), we track styles, themes and values, framing contemporary fashion in terms of inspiration from the past. Using material culture approaches, we view dress within the wider contexts of production and consumption, for example relating a gown from the nineteenth century to Gillray cartoons, Wedgwood porcelain and Jane Austen's novels. The course will include trips to museums in Brighton and London. If you want the various meanings behind codpieces or crinolines, or to check film costume for accuracy, then this is the course for you!

The 2008 tuition fee for the full eight-week Summer School (36 credits) is £2,050; or £1,080 for one 18 credit, four-week course. In addition, some courses have a lab fee or a field trip fee.
