Course Description
This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the styles and techniques of building in England from before the Norman Conquest to the 19th century. It covers ecclesiastical, military, 'polite' domestic, vernacular and local architecture. It is designed to appeal to a wide variety of people with a professional or a general interest in the history of buildings. It is an ideal introduction to the study of architecture for those involved in heritage or education. The certificate offers an introduction to the variety of techniques currently used to study historic buildings, and shows through practical examples how these contribute to scholarly understanding. It equips students with the skills, knowledge and vocabulary necessary to understand, and enjoy architecturally significant buildings. Lectures, class discussion, essays and field trips provide the opportunity to develop independent thought and to evaluate current research and scholarship in a critical manner.

Assessment method
The certificate is assessed by coursework and examinations at the end of each of the two years. Successful completion of the first year qualifies the student for second year assessment. Second year marks determine the final classification of the certificate.
