Course Description
This module is based on a selection of some of the many Romantic, Gothic and Victorian texts which are set in London. Although the main focus will be on literary texts, students will also consider film and architecture. Students will visit some of the relevant locales - including Whitechapel in the East End (home to some of the murderous passages of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and The Picture of Dorian Gray), Dickens' Southwark, Regency London and the Keats House - and students should be prepared to do some exploring for themselves. Texts considered include: poems by Keats and Blake, John Polidori's short story The Vampyre, Dickens' Great Expectations, and a selection of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories. Students are also advised to begin considering some of the more potent images of London in cinema - David Lynch's The Elephant Man, David Lean's Great Expectations and some of the many Sherlock Holmes films.
