Course Description
The Postgraduate Certificate in Trauma Studies has been specifically designed for people in an employment context related to trauma e.g., providing pastoral or therapeutic support, counsellors, psychotherapists, graduate psychologists, emergency services workers, aid agency workers, nursing, social work, prison service, youth offending, child abuse workers, teachers or other appropriate employment contexts. The Certificate in Trauma Studies is a one-year part time experiential course run jointly by the University of Nottinghams School of Sociology and Social Policy, and the School of Education. The Certificate in Trauma Studies is structured to develop the awareness, understanding and competences of a wide range of professionals in the field of trauma. Students will be required to complete two modules: Traumatic stress: Theory, issues, and contexts. Traumatic stress: Integrating theory and reflective practice. The first module is concerned with key issues in contemporary theory and practice. The second module is concerned with developing reflective skills as a professional in the field of trauma, and an understanding of methods of working in particular contexts and the ethical, moral and legal issues in trauma work.

Assessment method
Assessment is through one written reflective case study of 5,000-6,000 words and one written assignment of 5,000-6,000 words. Aims of the course are: To provide a challenging and professionally worthwhile academic course in trauma studies for postgraduate students from a range of professional backgrounds. To provide an experiential and process-orientated learning environment that supports students in developing an understanding of theory and practice in trauma studies and key issues in the recovery process for people who have experienced adversity. To provide a course that promotes learning and self-awareness through reflection on direct experience of life adversity in an experiential laboratory setting. To provide an environment which encourages an appreciation of professional issues in working in trauma contexts, such as ethics, boundaries, confidentiality, referral, and legal issues. To develop a course informed by a staff team committed to personal and professional development through research, consultancy and partnership with trauma agencies. To provide a course which aims to develop the student as a reflective professional and a critical independent thinker.
Entry Requirements
A candidate for the PG Certificate in Trauma Studies must: (a) normally be in an employment context related to trauma e.g., providing pastoral or therapeutic support, counsellors, psychotherapists, graduate psychologists, emergency services workers, aid agency workers, nursing, social work, prison service, youth offending, child abuse workers, teachers or other appropriate employment contexts. and (b) either (i) be graduates of an approved university or other institution of higher education with at least a second-class honours degree OR (ii) holders of an approved professional qualification deemed equivalent to a second-class honours degree; Applicants whose native language is not English must, as a minimum, fulfil one of the following conditions: IELTS 7.0 (no less than 6.5 in any element) TOEFL paper-based 600 (no less than 5.0 in TWE) TOEFL computer-based 250 (no less than 5.0 in essay rating) TOEFL iBT 100 (no less than 21 in any element) For those students who do not reach the standard prescribed above, where appropriate, successful completion of a full-time intensive English language and academic preparation course of appropriate length in the Centre for English Language Education may be accepted. Exceptions are sometimes made for students who have had their education entirely in the medium of English and where English is a well-established second language.
