The Northern Renaissance is renowned for the spectacular panel paintings that were produced in the Netherlands during the fifteenth century. Panel paintings were not, however, the only, or even the dominant, art form in this period. It is the wide range of other media, sometimes dismissed as the decorative arts, which will be investigated in this course, including metalwork, tapestry, and manuscript illumination. We will consider the production, patronage and function of the luxury arts, asking what luxury meant in the late middle ages. Particular objects studied will include famous works such as the Trs Riches Heures, the Royal Gold Cup, the Holy Thorn Reliquary, the Unicorn Tapestries, the Devonshire Hunting Tapestries, and many lesser known works of equal splendour. We will be investigating works from the Netherlands as well as other Northern European countries including France, England, and Germany.
