Voted top Greater Manchester university for student satisfaction! (National Student Survey 2011)
This programme is shaped by the demands of industry and covers design for a wide range of contemporary design and commercial contexts: from design for fashion and furnishing fabrics including accessories, carpet design, stationery products and packaging design, to contemporary gallery pieces and design for public spaces/interiors; students develop in-demand skills and their own creative flair, and learn how to present and market their work effectively in a competitive environment.
Year 1: This year gives students an opportunity to learn new approaches to design including: drawing and applied colour; an introduction to some of the practical processes via relevant design projects; computer aided design; critical/contextual studies and an awareness of the textile design industry and creative industries. Year 2: students establish their personal direction and begin to make use of the specialist areas available; they explore design for a range of outcomes and use the various practical workshops in printed, non woven textiles, embroidery and digital printing for fabrics and papers; students innovate by mixing these areas to create new and exciting outcomes introduced through relevant design projects; there is the opportunity to work on live projects, enter work for national and international design competitions and students may exhibit their work professional at trade fairs. Year 3: students work independently, spending most of the year developing a personal body of work via the personal project module, alongside the production of a marketing portfolio; the final graduate exhibition focuses on their proposed project and there is the opportunity to exhibit at the New Designers Exhibition in London.
