Course Description
THE PROGRAMME: The aim of the Postgraduate Diploma/MSc Telecommunications and Internet Systems course is to provide students with an advanced knowledge of telecommunications and distributed systems technologies. In particular:- You will gain an understanding of the issues which must be addressed when you design and implement a communications network. - You will consider the importance of telecommunications and computer networking as an infrastructural enabler for digital services. - You will investigate management issues and mechanisms that must be deployed in real-time to support relevant digital network topologies. - In addition, you will gain an appreciation of a range of applications which provide distributed services and an understanding of security issues in distributed systems. The course comprises of a taught programme of study consisting of topics such as: - Network Systems, Design and Management - Distributed Systems and Applications - Multimedia Concepts and Applications - Research Methods - Intelligent Systems. The Masters degree in Telecommunications and Internet Systems will comprise eight taught modules of the Postgraduate Diploma in addition to a substantial piece of independent research. PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION: The British Computer Society gives the Professional Graduate Diploma Exemption for the PGDip and the Professional Graduate Diploma and PGDip Project Exemption for the MSc.

Entry Requirements
Applicants must satisfy the University's general entrance requirements AND the entrance requirements for the course(s) of their choice. COURSE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Entry to the PGDip will normally require a good honours degree (minimum of a 2.2) in computing science or related discipline (which includes a significant component of computing), or a recognised professional qualification of equivalent standard, or a qualification deemed to be equivalent to the above. In addition, applicants should be competent coursers: knowledge of Java is assumed throughout. If you do not satisfy the above requirements but can demonstrate your ability to contribute to and benefit from the course, you may be admitted at the discretion of the Senate on the advice of the Course Director.
