This specialist telecommunication engineering degree programme, including a foundation year (year 0), is suitable for students whose current academic qualifications do not meet the entrance requirements for the 3-year programme; the course has particular emphasis on radio frequency circuits and systems, analogue and data communications and computer networks, and the communication of audio-visual information; however, modules in traditional electronics such as signal processing, circuit design, processors and software are also included; all students taking BEng courses can apply to be student members of the institution of electrical engineers and upon graduation students are automatically transferred to the class of member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology.
Year 0: Core modules; academic skills; computer programming; computers and electronics; computers for communication; pure mathematics. Year 1: Core modules; digital electronic systems; digital systems architecture; foundations of electronics 1; foundations of electronics 2; introduction to programming; mathematics for electronics and telecommunications; network fundamentals; professional development. Year 2: Core modules; analogue circuit design; c programming and embedded systems; digital systems design; engineering electromagnetics; engineering mathematics; signal processing; telecommunication principles; electronics and telecommunications project and industrial practice. Year 3: Core modules; digital signal processing; telecommunication systems; individual project; further modules may include: audio electronic systems and design; embedded systems design; large scale software systems and extreme programming; mobile robotics; network security; photonics networks and devices; radio frequency systems.
