Course Description
There is a need to transform the way that buildings are conceived, constructed, operated and dismantled as forty-seven per cent of greenhouse gas emissions and 50 per cent of UK's energy consumption emanates from buildings. This module will investigate how sustainability ideas are incorporated into the whole life cycle of buildings. Content -You will identify and use sustainable design techniques in a practical way enabling you to incorporate these techniques into building design and use. The result will be buildings being more energy efficient, adaptable, and economical to build and run with minimal environmental impact, whilst enhancing their local environment and meeting the intended occupant's needs. Typical areas of study: Relevant legislation and forthcoming changes - 1991 Energy white paper; Kyoto protocol; Code for Sustainable Building; Building regulations and Planning guidelines; The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. Techniques covered - Use of passive heating & cooling; Energy efficiency - reduced thermal bridging, improved air tightness, building shape etc; Maintaining and enhancing site biodiversity. Urban/rural issues - Allowing for flexible use; Water conservation/grey water recycling; Incorporating renewable energies.
