Course Description
Agriculture accounts for approximately 70 percent of the UK land cover, with arable crops and intensive grassland occupying in the order of 120,000 km2 (50 percent of UK land cover) (DETR 2000). The negative environmental impacts associated with agriculture continue to receive much public and media attention and agricultural policies increasingly address environmental concerns. It is now accepted that farmers must now meet basic environmental conditions in order to qualify for redirected EU support. This requirement looks set to become even more important as the UK strives to reconnect consumers to the food chain and encourage agricultural production to become more sustainable (Farming and Food: A Sustainable Future 2002). Recent figures suggest that 1.6 billion will be available for rural development and agri-environment schemes between 2000-2006 Rural Development), in addition to funding targeted at a national entry level agri-environment scheme due to commence in 2006.

Entry Requirements
For entry, candidates should posses an honours degree in a subject related to the course of interest. Alternatively a good HND pass in a relevant subject area, together with related industrial or professional experiences of at least one year. In addition, the suitability of candidates for particular programmes may be assessed by interview, considering reports from referees and by evaluating previous experience.
