Course Description
Activities in this area include studies in the field of: Corrosion resistance studies using novel compositionally-graded thin films and alloys with controlled microstructure, nanocomposite thin film hard coatings and metastable alloys for engineering applications including cutting tools, controlled surface topography for biomedical, mechanical and microelectronic applicantss, biocompatible films for implant prostheses, in-situ detyermination and control of stress in coatings and relation between stress and coating performance, production of improved contacts for microelectronics, optical multilayer coatings, chemical vapour deposition of improved diamond and diamond-like films, retention of micro-organisms on inert surfaces, effect of wear on cleansbility of surfaces in contact with food, pathogenic aspects of dental plaque, cross-contamination in dental technology procedures, quality issues in dental materials, microbiological studies on surfaces.

Entry Requirements
Masters degree or equivalent in a discipline appropriate to the proposed research and that includes sufficient training in research methods and the execution of a research project. If applicants do not meet this criteria but have had appropriate research or professional experience at postgraduate level which has resulted in published work, written reports, or other appropriate evidence of accomplishment this will be taken into consideration.
