Course Venue: University Of Salford , Greater Manchester, M5 4WT
Awarding body: University of Salford
Course Description
The one-year, part-time Post-Graduate Certificate in Supervision is designed to help prepare participants for subsequent accreditation as supervisors by the BACP. It can be taken as a stand-alone course or it completes two modules on the path to a PG Diploma or MSc, if the students wish to continue their study. The course aims to provide counsellors with a theoretical framework for safe reflective practice as a counselling supervisor, and the skills to be able to practice competently in this field. It offers an integrative model of supervision at a level of training appropriate to the requirements for individual supervisor accreditation with nationally recognised bodies. The module is based upon two theoretical models of supervision: the Process model (Hawkins and Shohet, 1989) and the Cyclical model (Page and Wosket, 1994), and incorporates work on the dynamics of the supervisory relationship, the use of congruence and self, and ethical, legal and boundary issues. An integration of theory and practical skills in the development of the student's own working model of supervision is developed. Students must maintain a minimum of 1 supervisee throughout the module.

Entry Requirements
Applicants would normally have a first degree, plus a Diploma in Counselling (BACP accredited or equivalent) and at least a year's post qualification supervised counselling experience. But the course recognises the value of professional training and experience in this field and wishes to encourage applications from students who may not meet the formal requirements but who are able to benefit from a Master's level course. All applications will be judged on their merit. The University of Salford Diploma in Counselling, being itself a Diploma in Higher Education, offers selectors an indication of the student's suitability for master's level study. If applicants do not have the standard entry requirements, they need to provide the necessary supporting evidence, e.g. their degree equivalent qualifications, the equivalence of their counselling training to a BACP Accredited course, the depth and nature of their clinical practice, and any other related professional training or accreditation. All applicants need to be sure that they can undertake the necessary hours of self-directed study needed throughout the course. Selection will normally be made on the above information plus an interview. It is therefore important that the application and additional information forms are completed fully and carefully. Applicants not holding a first degree may enrol initially on the PG Certificate or Diploma. Successful completion of the PG Diploma modules will allow progression from the PG Diploma to the MSc.
