This course aims to address some of the key issues involved in the academic study of sport as an aspect of popular media culture and draws on perspectives from cultural and media studies, sociology and sport studies in order to do this; the course specifically aims to enable students to gaina critical awareness of the social, cultural, economic and historical contexts of sports media production and reception, and the important role of the media in framing sport and sporting events/activities; the course provides opportunities for students to develop a range of production skills in creative/practical work, still photography, video and new media/multimedia technologies.
Year 1: Year 1 modules provide basic knowledge and production skills; studying the context of sports organisations and sports broadcasting helps students to understand key concepts, ideas and debates; students learn to apply production techniques in a sporting context using video, photography, sound and digital media and begin creating sports media products. Year 2: A compulsory module looks at a variety of research techniques and approaches to information sourcing and provides students with the framework for advanced study; a further compulsory module on work-based learning skills and approaches sets up work related study for year 3; there is a range of further options to focus sports related media skills in journalism, new media, moving image or photography. Year 3: Year 3 is designed to develop the application of skills in a working context in the first semester with an 8 week work placement; students follow this up with a range of theory or applied options in sports photography, webcasting for sports production or sports journalism for example alongside the dissertation; here students focus on a major piece of research on a topic area of choice; this can be an extended essay, or a combination of photographs, video or new media.
