Southwark Adult Learning Service promotes progression and enjoyment through adult learning. We offer part time, daytime and evening courses to learn new skills, gain confidence, prepare for work, support your children's learning or for leisure. We are committed to providing responsive courses and regularly ask the views of our students on what can be improved. Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds and reflect the wonderful diversity of Southwark.
Our main centre is the Thomas Calton Centre, but we also run courses at other venues around Southwark including Kingswood House, Peckham Rye Tabernacle and St Matthew's Centre.
What's on offer
Learners can choose from a wide range of courses across a number of curriculums including Art, Craft and Design, Childcare, English (ESOL), Literacy and Numeracy, Health and Fitness, Customer Service, Creative Writing, and Family learning. Learners can study for nationally recognised qualifications, or choose programmes that support learning for leisure.
We have courses in ceramics, fashion, pattern cutting, soft tailoring, soft furnishing, upholstery, drawing (including life drawing), painting, woodwork, childcare, becoming a teaching assistant, computing, dance, pilates, yoga, fitness, family learning for parents and children together, keeping up with your children programmes for parents, literacy and numeracy and English. We also work with partner organisations across the borough to deliver a wide range of specialist programmes including horticulture, ESOL with radio, blacksmithing, volunteering and a range of other programmes.
We provide a Student advice service to support learners making choices about which course is suitable, looking for work, planning their next step or finding out about useful local contacts. For learners with young children, a creche is available for children aged six months to four and a half years, open from 9am to 6pm weekdays.
There are regular Family Learning courses and events throughout the year. You can try something different with your children including making books, games, arts, crafts, fashion, computers, digital photography, dancing or get help to support your child's learning at school. These course and events are run in a variety of venues across the borough including schools, children's centres, libraries and voluntary organisations.
