Sociology provides ways of making sense of a world undergoing unprecedented social change and uncertainty; it aims to explain the origins, formation and development of modern societies; sociological research is devoted to understanding the conditions that govern personal experience of everyday life as well as the structures that determine the overall character of a society.
Stage 1: Introduction to sociology; language; options. Stage 2 & 3: Concepts and theories in sociology; social research methods; language; options: childhood, society and children�s rights; criminal justice in modern Britain; gender, crime and criminal justice; globalisation and social change; health, illness and medicine; the imagination: studies in culture and creativity; literature, culture and society; mental health; modernity; politics and sociology of the environment; popular culture, media and society; �race� and ethnic identity; sex gender socialisation; sociological perspectives on violence; sociology dissertation; the sociology of belonging; sociology of deviance; �terrorism� in modern society; underdevelopment and development, the third world; urban sociology; youth and crime; year spent studying in Italy between stage 2 & 3.
