It is the aim of the course to provide a sound training in techniques of sociological research and analysis; combining cross-country and historical analysis helps students to understand contemporary societies; students gain the skills to carry out personal empirical research based on theoretical paradigms and methodological tools; studying English language gives students an insight into how the English language came to occupy its current dominant role; it helps students understand how language is connected with other aspects of society, including power, culture and the economy.
