Students undertake 4 modules on research issues and other topics relevant to their specialist interests, together with a preliminary thesis based on initial research in their chosen field; on successful completion of the MPhil, students become formally registered for a PhD; current staff research interests include: science, technology and the environment; conversation analysis, discourse analysis and ethnomethodology; media studies; health, illness and the sociology of medicine; social theory and feminist studies.
