Course offers an analysis of the relationships between media, culture and society, covering a range of contemporary media forms, including television, radio, newspapers, magazines, cinema, popular music, the internet and mobile phones; this is combined with a focus upon contemporary media, culture and sociological theory with training in the use of qualitative and quantitative methods.
Level 1: Introduction to the sociological study of media and of youth culture; sociological theory and method. Level 2: Specialisation in media and culture; core modules: media, communication and society 2; media and technology in practice; options include: culture, media and everyday life; sociology of art. Level 3: Dissertation related to the sociology of media and culture; 3 specialist options from list including: producing new technologies; music and new technology; technoscience and cyberculture; modules from across the discipline of sociology covering deviance, gender, ethnicity, later life, health and illness, or childhood.
