This programme is designed to meet the needs of those wishing to pursue meaningful employment in one of the many careers that require an in-depth understanding of people, behaviour, society and social life. In year 1: they will enter the programme with a variety of academic and vocational histories. The first year of the programme will develop these various skills and experiences, synthesising them with basic competencies, language and concepts of the four disciplinary strands of the programme (psychology, sociology, cultural studies and research methods) and developing the methods and applications of knowledge. It will also encourage them to take responsibility for their own learning by supporting a variety of learning styles through the range of leaning and assessment strategies proposed below. Areas of study: classical sociological analysis, contemporary sociological analysis, introduction to psychology, applied psychology, cultural studies, methods of cultural analysis and criticism, developing the effective learner, introduction to social research. In year 2: it will develop their ability to apply the basic competencies, language and concepts of the four strands of the programme and to address the subject areas in more depth. There will be an increased emphasis on independent research-based learning and the application of analytical skills acquired in the previous year. Areas of study: social structures and structured inequalities, poverty and social policy, abnormal psychology, culture and difference, critical thought, research method.
Students must have a minimum of 160 UCAS points and required one or more of the following qualifications: BTEC National Diploma Merit, BTEC National Certificate Merit, AVCE Merit, Cache DCE, Access to HE Diploma.
