Course Description
This course is for people who want to express their creativity through the voice and who have had no previous experience of singing at all. They do not need to be able to read music, hold a tune or keep rhythm. They will find themselves in a small, safe, supported group; and they will be with people many of whom perhaps like them, are terrified at the very idea of singing. It is divided into two 6 week levels. In Level 1 they will learn simple vocal training exercises and receive a basic introduction to the voice and how it works. This includes an introduction to breathing fully for singing. They will also be helped to find their own sound, develop their self-confidence and shown how to use their voice to sing melodies and songs in a group. The classes provide a comfortable and encouraging environment to learn. In this course they sing songs, do vocal, breathing and relaxation exercises, and experiential expression techniques, discuss and share information, but mostly do lots of singing. For the second 6 weeks in Level 2 there is more in depth instruction and exercises in vocal technique, breathing, voice projection and development. They will learn harmony singing, backing vocals, the basics of musical theory, begin to work on performance technique, learn creative expression techniques and self-confidence building exercises. The course runs alongside the Level 1 course with the Level 2 participants being asked to take the more difficult parts of the exercises and harmonies. It consists of singing mostly in groups with a few solo moments in preparation for the Intermediate course. The classes provide a supportive and comfortable environment in which to experiment with their voice, develop their own particular sound and vocal training to increase the power, range and volume of their voice. They sing songs, do vocal, breathing and relaxation exercises, and experiential expression techniques, discuss and share information and do lots of singing.
