Course Description
The PGCE Secondary course trains graduates to teach Art & Design, Music, Drama, Mathematics or Design & Technology (Food & Textiles) in secondary schools. Two-thirds of the course takes place in school: a serial placement of two days a week in 'School 1'; a 6-7 week block placement in 'School 1'; a week's observation in a primary school of your choosing; a twelve week block placement in 'School 2' and a special project placement. Work in school, is supported by modules taken in the University delivered using a combination of workshops, lectures, seminar groups and individual study. General Professional Studies modules allow trainee teachers to explore a range of educational issues based on school experience: teaching and learning styles, the National Curriculum, inclusion and equal opportunities, etc. Subject Seminars enable trainee teachers to apply the knowledge and understanding they have gained to teaching in their specialist subject. Both Primary & Post-Compulsory Education are offered at professional-graduate level only. Secondary courses are offered at both postgraduate & professional graduate level.

For 2007 entry, in England & Wales, ITT providers could charge trainee teachers on postgraduate ITT courses, variable tuition fees, of up to £3070 per year.

Entry Requirements
The usual entry qualifications include a good degree from a UK higher education institution or a recognised equivalent, at least 50 per cent of which is in the specialist subject you wish to teach. You will need GCSE grade C or above (or its equivalent) in both English and Mathematics at the point of application. In addition to this you will need to meet the Training and Development Agency (TDA) requirements for medical fitness and successfully complete a criminal records check via the CRB, through the Faculty. You will be required to attend a selection interview, lead a short group discussion and take a written test to assess your standard of English. We welcome applications from mature students and from members of communities traditionally under-represented in higher education.
