This course is offered on a non-modular basis; it aims to engender in trainees a strong teaching capability and expertise in both engineering and design and technology; it explores established and new materials and technologies; and establishes a strong foundation for innovative curriculum development, especially in the context of engineering in secondary schools; computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacture (CAM) are key elements of this course; it combines taught modules, school and FE college placements, and visits to industry enabling trainees to become confident and competent teachers of engineering; it provide trainees with: an understanding of the nature and philosophy of engineering in schools and of its place in the curriculum; knowledge and understanding of the national curriculum for design and technology; a capability to maximise learning opportunities through innovative lesson planning and class management; an understanding of the broader responsibilities of the teacher in the general school community and its local and national settings; health and safety training.
