This short sculpture course is for anyone interested in gaining a better understanding of sculpture and is suitable for people of all abilities, including beginners. Through the use of clay you will have the opportunity to explore both the technique of ‘additive/building work’ and ‘removing/carving’. You will be encouraged to work in a way that allows the natural development of your work.
There will be no use of armatures and/or any other restrictive practises. Instead there will be a little-known method of building using structural clay ‘elements’. This will allow you to work more easily and explore your own creativity. There will also be some drawing work (no drawing skills are necessary) around the human form, as well as going into the environment to observe the natural world - noting its rhythms and beauty.
This course will help with improving observational skills, deeper thought and sensitivity and increasing awareness and understanding of form and mass. You will work towards completin one or two clay sculptures ready for kiln firing. Results can be both interesting and exciting but more importantly there should be a feeling of opening up and learning.
