This course is for students who want to study scientific subjects at university or who seek a practical career in the sciences. The course takes two years to complete and is an alternative to taking A Levels. It is particularly suited to those who have an interest in pursuing a scientific career. The emphasis of the course is on learning fundamental scientific principles and understanding their applications. The subject matter concerns aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics as well as developing IT skills. Students complete six units in the first year for the National Award, then a further six in year 2 to complete the National Certificate. In addition, year 2 students will complete an Extended Project qualification which also carries UCAS points. There are regular written and practical assessments.
