I have had an interest in Complementary/Holistic Therapy for many years, particularly Nutritional Therapy. Although I had gathered a lot of information and experience over the years, when I found myself at a 'career crossroads' in my mid forties, I didn’t think that I could pursue 'my dream' of training for an Accredited Practitioner Qualification. With a young family to look after, I thought that the rigid timetable of coursework and attendance at college or evening classes would be impractical.
Fortunately, I found the 'distance learning courses' offered by the School of Natural Health Sciences (SNHS). Although I originally wanted to study Nutrition, I also took their Colour Therapy course as part of a 'Special Offer'. A gift to myself, just to learn for interest. I went on to study Iridology and Stress Management. With diplomas in these subjects I had the confidence to 'open my own practice' and I rent a small therapy room locally.
Although my training allows me to work with many types of disorder, I decided that I wanted to specialise in working with children with Attention Deficit, Hyperactivity and Autistic Spectrum Disorders.
With this in mind I enrolled for and have completed the Advanced Diploma in Stress Management, with SNHS. I am currently working on Advanced Nutrition and Homeopathy, which will be followed by other subjects, that I believe will enhance my professional development.
The beauty of working with the School of Natural Health Sciences (SNHS) is that 'each subject' seems to add a different dimension to my work. Although Nutrition is an important part of a protocol for attention deficit, hyperactivity and autistic spectrum disorders, I can now work with an additional 'range of tools'.
For example, Colour Therapy can be an 'actual treatment' in the therapy room, or can be advice on colour schemes and better lighting in the home, providing a calming environment in a hyperactive child’s bedroom. Stress Management techniques for both 'child and parents' add to what is developing my comprehensive 'Holistic Practice'.
As a Therapist, I believe it is always wise to offer 'several different therapy treatments' to 'potential clients' and therefore attract a wider spectrum of people seeking treatment for their ailments. Already I can see my practise beginning to grow, which is really encouraging.
Gradually I have incorporated the skills I am learning from the School’s courses into my work. However, even if I had not gone into Complementary Therapy professionally, the courses would still have been valuable for gaining skills to improve my 'own health' and that of 'my family'.
I like being able to study the courses in my 'own time and at my own pace', and the staff at the school are friendly, approachable and quick to respond to a query. I feel fully supported throughout each course. For me, distance learning has been the successful route to 'achieving my goals'. Many thanks to The School of Natural Health Sciences. (SNHS Ltd.)
