This course is aimed at students who want to study a rural land and property degree course, gain an Honours degree and become a technical member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, after further relevant work experience; it will be particularly attractive to those students who just miss obtaining enough UCAS points to gain a place on an accredited degree course leading to full professional membership of the RICS.
The course is a modular one with eight modules studied in each academic year; the modules taught on the course fall into four main themes: surveying, valuation, and professional practice; law, business and finance; the rural economy and diversification; and agriculture and the environment; Modules in year 1: academic and professional development; estate agency office practice; construction and surveying; utility wayleave and easement; valuation and professional practice; principles of rural development and land use; introduction to business for rural practice chartered surveyors; introduction to agriculture. Year 2: research methods; rural professional practice; farm business law; agriculture for rural property managers; farm business management; planning and environmental law and practice; agriculture and environment; options: woodland and field/countryside sports management; woodland management. Year 3: placement year Year 4: Honours research project; applied valuation and taxation; rural property and facilities management; agricultural tenancy law; rural leisure and diversification; integrated countryside management; options: sustainable forestry and forest products; sustainable energy and the rural estate; economic policy and rural development.
