Formerly known as the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama:
The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland provides vocational education at the highest professional level in dance, drama, music, production and screen. We are the only conservatoire in the UK, and one of very few internationally, providing this breadth of artistic disciplines.
We offer students an extraordinary blend of: intensive tuition; all round support and care; a rigorous performance schedule; and the space to collaborate with others across the disciplines if they wish. Both students and staff are prolific in creating truly innovative work.
We are the busiest performing arts company in Scotland; our curriculum drives an intensive production schedule, with many performances every week - over 600 a year in our own venues, and more in external venues.
Our facilities, at two purpose-built city centre locations, are amongst the best in Europe. Our ongoing investment programme has recently included £6million in our new Speirs Locks Studios, and a further £2million in our Renfrew Street campus. We have six professional performance venues, a high ratio of practice rooms, exceptional recording studios, leading professional stage technology and workshops, four bespoke dance studios, new studios for technical, design, scenic art, set-building and costume design, and the latest IT and digital technologies.
Our industry connections are unrivalled. Our International Fellows programme brings world renowned professionals to the Royal Conservatoire to teach, work, and perform with our students and staff. We work in partnership with all of the national performing companies, and we’re able to provide incredible opportunities for performing and collaborating with a wealth of organizations and individuals. Our partners include the BBC, Scottish Ballet, Scottish Opera, the National Theatre of Scotland, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Celtic Connections, New Moves International, Edinburgh International Festival Fringe, Shakespeare’s Globe, Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland and Classic FM, amongst others. Our partnership with Sabhal Mòr Ostaig promotes and develops the Gaelic performing arts and, in particular, provides new possibilities in Gaelic drama training. There is a range of mentoring, side by side, emerging artist, and young artist in residence schemes for our students and our graduates.
We have almost 800 undergraduate and postgraduate students from around the world studying our specialist degree programmes including Acting, Modern Ballet, Music, Opera, Jazz, Contemporary Performance Practice, Technical and Production Arts, Digital Film and Television, Musical Theatre and Classical and Contemporary Text. Alongside our undergraduate and postgraduate provision we offer evening and weekend classes, short courses, summer schools and a comprehensive programme of Professional Development. Our Junior Conservatoire for 7-18 year olds nurtures young musical talent and we also organize the Musicworks programme, bringing instrumental lessons to pupils from Primary 1 through to Secondary 6 in schools throughout Scotland.
We have a distinctive ethos for our research programmes; the key elements of performance and/or creation give our research profile a clear and individual identity. The Bachelor of Education (Music), the main route into classroom music teaching in Scotland, is the only degree in the world which offers school experience across all four years of the programme.
At the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland we are creating the future for performance.
