The course involves a large element of independent study and students are required to carry out original research project; this is supervised by a senior academic and should add to current knowledge and be worthy of publication; students are expected to study theoretical aspects associated with the research and develop their own knowledge base relating to the theoretical concepts underpinning the study; the project should be presented in a concise, well-presented thesis; MPhil and PhD research degrees are generic awards to candidates in any subject area; the degree does not, therefore, indicate that dentistry was the subject of the research.
Research areas include: Dental biomaterials; dental materials and dental technology; clinical service and standards; dental education service.
