Religion, philosophy and ethics is a subject which deals with some of the most important issues of our time; society is multi-cultural and multi-religious, and this provides opportunities and challenges; there is a need for people to be better informed about the subject, in the interests of mutual respect and understanding; students come from any faith or none; learners are open-minded, questioning and interested in what motivates people to live and believe within a religious tradition; students want to study in a learning culture of respect and tolerance for people and their religious beliefs and practices; learners engage in creative activity: art; creative writing; there is a chance to spend some abroad; there is a chance to visit Poland, associated with the holocaust, in order to understand this from the Jewish perspective; students meet people from the world�s religions and visit their places of worship; lectures on theological topics are organised at the local cathedrals, York Minster and Ripon.
Level 1: Introduction to the philosophy of religion; introducing Islam; introduction to Asian religions; virtues and values: Contemporary Christian ethics; foundations of Christian theology. Level 2: Contemporary ethics; ethics in Asian religions; religion and human diversity; theology: Action and reflection; Western philosophy; students have the chance to spend the 1st semester at an overseas partner university (USA or Canada). Level 3: Religion writing and the creative imagination; Eastern philosophy; options and issues in moral theology; religion and the visual arts; independent research module.
