Reflexology involves the skilled application of pressure to specific points on the feet in order to restore balance to the body. These points represent reflex areas which correspond to parts of the body. Reflex areas are to be found on the soles, the top and the sides of the feet. Similar reflex areas can also be found on the hands. Hand reflexology may be used where it is difficult to use the techniques on the feet. Reflexology is a simple, natural and harmless way to check and maintain health. It can be used to obtain relief from all kinds of conditions, from general stress to specific disorders - often where conventional treatment has failed. Some common disorders that often react favourably to treatment are: migraine, arthritis, backache, asthma, hypertension, digestive problems, cystitis, skin conditions, and stress and tension related disorders. It can also be used to maintain good health, build resistance and prevent illness, as well as to induce a state of relaxation and enhance energy and vitality. The following components will be studied: History, theory and philosophy of reflexology; Anatomy of the foot and hand; Common disorders that usually react favourably to treatment; Reflex zones and their relation to organs, glands and structures of the body; Other Complimentary Therapies and when to refer to them; Professional, symptomatic and casual treatments; Business and legal requirements; Advertising and marketing.
