This course will explore subsequent representations of ‘outsiders’ in Julius Caesar, with its complex and subversive ideal of Roman republicanism; in Antony and Cleopatra, with its seductive Egyptian queen; and in The Roaring Girl, in which Moll Cutpurse refuses to be bound by arbitrary social conventions. Religious drama, through the ‘Magi’ and King Herod, bequeathed positive and pejorative types of the ‘stranger’ to the Shakespearean stage.
