Course Qualification: PgCert in Provision of Health Care to People Experiencing Homelessness
Course Venue: Oxford University , Oxfordshire, OX1 2JD
Course Description
The Postgraduate Certificate is comprised of six sequential modules, each of which will require students to participate in online as well as face-to-face activities, with the exception of the first module which will be delivered completely online. Module 1: 'Key Concepts in Health Care for Homeless People' - The first module in the course gives an overview of the causes of homelessness, existing service provision, and the challenges of responding to the complex needs of people experiencing homelessness. Health and social care workers as well as other professionals who provide services to people experiencing homelessness might consider taking this module as a stand alone. Modules 2 and 3: 'Organisational issues related to provision of services' - These modules focus on the issues surrounding homelessness in greater depth. Current homelessness and housing legislation as well as the concepts of social exclusion and social capital are explored. Additionally, different forms of homelessness are examined, giving students an understanding of differing health care needs. These modules provide students with the opportunity to discuss philosophical and sociological aspects of homelessness with experts in the field. Modules 4 and 5: 'Case studies in homeless issues' - Key clinical conditions faced by people experiencing homelessness such as substance misuse, alcohol misuse, as well as mental and physical illness are considered. Approaches to dealing with complex and multiple needs as well as principles of risk management are explored. Critical thinking and multidisciplinary collaboration is encouraged. Module 6: 'Seminar on health care for homeless people' - Students are required to complete a project that demonstrates an understanding of a complex issue within the topic of homelessness. Synthesis of knowledge acquired in the previous modules is expected.
