The Prince's Drawing School

The Prince's Drawing School Overview Image

The aim of The Prince’s Drawing School is to raise the standard and profile of drawing through teaching and practise. It is one of only a few institutions in the world offering in-depth, quality tuition for those who wish to develop their observational drawing skills.

The Prince’s Drawing School believes in drawing in the studio, drawing London and drawing from art. We hold classes in our studios and offer many classes in museums, unusual venues and out and about in London. We believe we are the only arts institution in London with such a varied number of collaborators allowing us to offer this rich mix of opportunities to draw.

The Prince’s Drawing School is part of The Prince’s Charities is a group of not-for-profit organizations of which The Prince of Wales is President. To find out more about The Prince’s Charities visit The Prince's Charities Community website.

The Public Programme

The Prince’s Drawing School runs a Public Programme alongside its postgraduate course. Over 5,000 students have attended classes since 2000; there are over 250 alumni of the Postgraduate Programme.

The Public Programme offers a broad range of affordable courses designed for both professional artists and other interested adults. Drawing instruction is delivered by distinguished artists and teachers from leading institutions including The Royal Academy, The Royal College of Art and The Slade. All of our courses are open to all levels.

The Public Programme is run from our two campuses, The Prince’s Drawing School in East London and Kensington Palace Studios in West London:

  • The Prince’s Drawing School in Shoreditch runs over 37 courses in drawing- in the studio, in galleries and museums, out and about in London and Etching courses run from the Print Room.
  • The Making Process programme at Kensington Palace Studios incorporates the wider applied arts alongside drawing, painting, sculpture and art history.

The Drawing Year

The Drawing Year is an MA-level course with a postgraduate diploma certificate, assessed by an independent board. It offers twenty five students the opportunity to focus on drawing from observation for one academic year. Drawing Year students have access to all Public Programme courses, attending a minimum of two days a week in classes, with the opportunity to attend more classes if they wish. There is a weekly forum and lecture for Drawing Year students, a studio space in Shoreditch is provided for the duration of the year and an exhibition is held at the end of the academic year in September.

There are no tuition fees for the Drawing Year and some additional maintenance bursaries may be available on application, there is also no written component to the course. For more information please attend an Open Day where you can meet staff and students for an introduction to the course and a tour of the facilities.
