Depending on the ages students would like to teach, students choose to follow 1 of 3 pathways: foundation or key stage 1, key stage 1 or lower key stage 2 or key stage 2 only; all 3 offer detailed courses in the full range of national curriculum subjects and religious education; school-based work consists of 24 weeks spread over the 3 years of the course, and gives students the opportunity to put their learning into professional practice; in each year students are placed in a partnership school under the guidance of a teacher who has received mentor training from the university; students work in school is closely linked to their study through a series of tasks, which they undertake with the support from the class teacher; University-based courses cover all national curriculum subjects, both in terms of subject knowledge and the skills needed to teach them effectively; on the learning and teaching course they examine the ways young children develop and learn, as well as picking up practical skills such as managing behaviour, planning and assessment; the themes of information and communication technologies, global education, inclusion, special educational needs and personal, social and health education are interwoven throughout.
