This course is offered on a non-modular basis; successful candidates are awarded a PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and are able to take 2 modules of a Master's in Education and the Catholic Certificate of Religious Studies; the course provides trainees with the practical and theoretical experience needed to meet the standards for qualified teacher status; over 20 weeks of the 40 week programme are spent in school, where trainees are supported by experienced mentors; it includes 2 main placements, 1 in Key Stage 1 and 1 in Key Stage 2; placement visits begin early in the programme and focus on key aspects of the teaching role, such as planning, assessing and managing children�s behaviour; responsibility gradually increases as the year progresses, until during final placement, trainees assume full responsibility for teaching and managing a class, and have the opportunity to assess, level and record children�s work; when trainees are not in school, they attend a taught programme at the training base, which addresses professional skills and all subjects of the national curriculum for primary schools; particular emphasis is placed on English, mathematics, science, religious education and information communication technology (ICT); lectures are delivered by skilled, practising teachers and advisors, familiar with the latest educational thinking; although trainees follow a common curriculum, personal learning plans offer the opportunity to tailor aspects of the programme by undertaking Master's-level study or visiting SEN schools and children�s centres.
